Two-Week Autumn Half-Term Introduced for 2026/27
New Term Structure: Community and voluntary controlled schools will adopt a two-week autumn half-term starting in the 2026/27 academic year.
How It’s Implemented:
The extra week in autumn will be offset by shortening the summer break by five days.
The total school year will remain at 195 days, which includes 5 inset (training) days.
Support for the Change:
60% of schools that responded were in favour.
30% were against, and 10% undecided.
Majority of local residents also supported the extended autumn break.
Reasoning Behind the Change:
Aimed at achieving consistency in term dates across the county.
Responds to feedback from schools, staff, and families who face challenges with inconsistent term schedules.
Aligns with a growing national trend—about 1 in 10 state-funded schools in England have already made this change, including in Surrey.
Official Statement:
Ms. Curran, speaking for the council, emphasized the intent to work collaboratively with schools and trusts to ensure aligned term dates county-wide.
