According to police and official sources, the bus was travelling from Bengaluru to Gokarna with around 32 passengers on board when a container truck, which reportedly jumped the road divider, struck the bus from the opposite lane at high speed. The force of the collision caused the bus to catch fire almost immediately, trapping many passengers inside.

Casualties and Injuries

Preliminary reports indicate at least 9–10 people have died in the accident, including several passengers and the truck driver. Many of the fatalities were caused by the intense fire that spread rapidly through the vehicle. At least 20 passengers were injured, some with serious burns and trauma, and were rushed to hospitals in Hiriyur, Chitradurga, Sira and other nearby towns for treatment. Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue and more information becomes available.

Eyewitness Accounts and Rescue Efforts

Eyewitnesses described shocking scenes, with the fire quickly consuming the bus and passengers desperately trying to escape. The bus driver recounted seeing the truck approaching at high speed and attempting to control the vehicle but being unable to prevent the impact. Some passengers had to break windows to flee the burning bus, while others were unable to escape in time.

Emergency teams, including fire brigades and police, were deployed swiftly to fight the blaze and carry out rescue and recovery operations. The Superintendent of Police of Chitradurga and senior police officials rushed to the accident site to oversee the response and investigation.

Investigation and Official Response

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Initial probes suggest that the truck may have lost control and crossed the central median before hitting the bus. The impact near the bus’s fuel tank is believed to have triggered the intense fire. Officials are also examining road conditions, vehicle speeds, and possible mechanical failures as part of the inquiry.

The accident has drawn strong reactions from public officials. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and announced ex gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh for families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has also ordered a thorough probe into the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

Impact on Traffic and Community

The tragic accident led to major traffic disruption along NH-48 as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the scene. The community has been left shocked by the incident, and officials have emphasized the need for improved highway safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
